What’s Really in Your Laundry Soap? A Natural Alternative That Works

Have you ever stopped to think what is the ingredients in your laundry soap? I have — and not just out of curiosity. As a teenager, I suffered severe breakouts if I used the wrong laundry soap. And asthma triggers as I walked down the aisle of laundry detergent. Years ago, I was introduced to a natural laundry soap from a well-known company. This became a life changing experience to have a natural laundry soap that did not cause breakouts or breathing issues. The journey did not stop, I knew there was a way to cut cost and have an affordable laundry soap.

After research I found 3 simple ingredients that are safe, effective and cost affordable. My family has been using the natural laundry soap for over 5 years. We have never gone back to the commercial products.

Ingredient Breakdown:

The most popular ingredient in laundry soap is baking soda. We all know that baking soda is the most affordable product we can purchase in the stores. Not only is it cost effective, but there are many benefits adding to laundry soap. Baking soda eliminates odors by neutralizing odor molecules.

For those who have hard water, baking soda is excellent in softening the water and allowing the cleaners to do their jobs. Top it off it is biodegradable and safe for septic systems. Win, Win!!

Another popular ingredient in homemade laundry soap is washing soda. Same as baking soda, washing soda is cost effective option for laundry soap. Beyond the cost effectiveness, washing soda binds to the hard water minerals allowing for a better lather and reducing soap scrum. Washing soda is also effective in tackling stains and odors while brightening whites and freshens colors.

Last is Epsom Salt, this works great as a gentle fabric softener and reducing static cling. Switching to a simple, natural laundry soap has made a huge difference for my family. It’s gentle, effective, and doesn’t break the bank. If you’re sensitive to conventional detergents or just looking to cut out unnecessary chemicals, I encourage you to try it out.

Best Practices for Homemade Laundry Soap:

-Use 1-2 TBSP per a full load depending on the soil and stains.

-Add couple drops of essential, if desired.

-Top load washers, best to remove the dispense tray to avoid build up. If there is build up, add a small amount of vinegar to breakdown the laundry soap.

-For tough stains, continue to pre-treat as usual.
