Ever wonder what makes an excellent homemade soap?
When it comes to skincare, I believe simple is best—especially when it’s made with love, by hand, and with ingredients you can recognize. That’s why every bar of my goat milk soap is carefully crafted with skin-loving oils, butters, and, of course, fresh goat milk. In this post, I’m breaking down exactly what goes into my soap and what each ingredient brings to the bar.
The star of the show. Goat milk is incredibly nourishing and gentle on the skin. It’s rich in lactic acid, vitamins A and D, and helps to hydrate while naturally exfoliating. It gives the soap a creamy texture and is perfect for those with sensitive or dry skin. Bonus the goat milk is not processed and is a natural way to help cleanse the skin.
Water and lye are essential ingredients in the soap-making process. When combined with oils and fats, they trigger saponification—the chemical reaction that transforms these ingredients into soap. While lye itself is a strong alkaline, it’s completely used up during this process, leaving behind a safe, skin-friendly bar. Without water and lye, there simply wouldn’t be soap!
Coconut oil adds to the hardiness to increase the longevity of the soap. Also know to remove dirt and impurities when used in a soap. And enhances the lather (bubbles).
Lard is a traditional, time-tested ingredient that’s rich in vitamins and nutrients, making it highly moisturizing for the skin. It’s especially gentle, making it a great option for those with sensitive skin, as it cleanses without stripping away natural oils. In soap making, lard also adds structure and hardness to the bar, helping it last longer and hold its shape between uses.
Soybean oil is a versatile ingredient that balances lather, conditioning, and hardness in soap. It’s rich in essential fatty acids and vitamin E, helping to nourish and protect the skin.
Olive oil forms the foundation of my soap recipe. It’s packed with vitamins A and E and provides deep, soothing moisture. It also contributes to a mild, creamy lather that’s gentle on all skin types.
Grapeseed oil lightweight oil is full of antioxidants and vitamin E. It absorbs quickly, making it ideal for oily or acne-prone skin, and leaves the skin feeling soft without a greasy residue.
At the end of each batch, I add extra moisturizing ingredients—called superfats—to give the soap an extra boost of nourishment. Shea butter, vitamin E, glycerin, and sunflower oil help lock in hydration, protect the skin, and deliver a rich dose of antioxidants and vitamins. These superfats make the soap even gentler, ensuring your skin feels soft, healthy, and cared for after every wash.
Every ingredient I use is chosen with care—no harsh chemicals, no artificial detergents. Just natural, wholesome elements that work together to nourish and protect your skin. When you use my goat milk soap, you’re not just cleansing—you’re treating your skin to something truly good.
